Where should cuts in social care be made?
With more people accessing Self Directed Support and managing their own care, we need to see a huge reduction of middle managers in local authorities. We need to retain social workers who do the work on the coal face, but the complete tier of middle management are now redundant as people are now managing their own care. This would allow senior managers to work directly with local managers and would have the effect of bringing the funding down near the coal face where it will give better value and be more effective.
At the moment we have a situation where service users are bearing the brunt of the cuts to protect the jobs and pensions of these redundant middle managers.
